For quite some time, I have been considering a small but important reorganization of The Mac Orchard’s categories to better reflect recent application trends. Some applications covered on the Orchard involve older, less-frequently-used protocols that are only of interest to a limited component of the Orchard audience. These applications include: Gopher browsersWAIS browsersVRML viewersUUCP applications
Internet protocols being Internet protocols (in that they never really die, they just fade away), these programs still have use to some people, even though the vast majority of Internet users probably don’t even know what they are. That said, I have left programs of this type on the Orchard not just for curiosity’s or history’s sake, but simply because they do still provide functionality, albeit in a much more limited form than they once did. For example, even in 2003, it’s still fun to run TurboGopher and see the strange and interesting things that are left sitting out in “Gopherspace.” There are versions of software for older Mac systems that you can only find this way.
But I often think that many Orchard visitors must think it silly to come to a web site and see categories such as “Gopher/WAIS” when there is so much going on that is more relevant. Indeed, combining Gopher and WAIS a few years ago into a single category was my first attempt at making a consolidated page of “Old Applications That Still Work.” To extend that idea, I am now considering taking all Gopher, WAIS, VRML, UUCP and other such applications and combining them into a new category called “Older Protocols.”
Additionally, I would simultaneously like to add another page called “Web Services,” to house applications like RSS newsreaders and other such http-based applications that speak markup languages other than HTML.
But before doing this, I really want to know what Orchard visitors think, because I very much want to make sure this works for you. After all, as an Orchard visitor, the Orchard is your site as much as it is mine. Please share your opinions here in the discussion forums, or, if you feel it’s quicker and easier, email your thoughts to reorganize@macorchard.com.
Thanks!
