Really...

I think that it is truly sad that here we are in January of 2007, and there is not a single site submission tool for Mac OSX. Go to VersionTracker and try searching for one by using terms like "site submission" and "search engine submission", and you will come up empty-handed. VSE Be Found was good in its day under OS 9, and I did purchase it, and used it about once a month, but when OSX came along, they fizzled out with empty promises of making an OSX version. I am really surprised that not a single Mac programmer has taken up the challenge, and written a new site submission program. Clearly, there is a need for us webmasters.

Hey, Old guy, this is goatgal.  I'm an old mac gal myself and I say let's hire a hot shot developer and make our own program for doing what VSE be found did and then market it and make some cash. There is certainly a market for it, of that I am positive.

Well, lo and behold! We own some early model G4's on which we are now running Tiger 10.4.8. These are the ones where you can still install OS 9, but not actually boot your machine from it. Well, I still have OS 9 on one partition, plus VSE; so I just re-registered VSE Be Found by sticking in my old reg. code, and tried it out. I got some errors, since their submission scripts are outdated, or the submisson sites have changed in some way; but I bet it still worked with a good 40 or 50 submission sites.

Well, now I already have two partitions in this computer one for the 9 stuff (I don't have a system on there though)....so you think I can load system 9 back into that one and not bomb the entire computer?  I have been having system 10 do it's little emulation thing on the 9 programs that I need to run, but VSE just won't work that way. I have 10.3.9 on the other partition.  I would, of course, back everything up.  What do you think. Should I try it?

It may work...depending on how new, or old, your computer is. With the later G4's and the G5's, it is my understanding that you can't even install OS 9 on them anymore. But, if you have an early G4, or something older, e.g., a G3, there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to safely install OS 9. However, you need to make sure that you install 9.2.2, and not an earlier version. Let me know how it goes, or if you encounter any problems.

I've got the G4 1/2 bowling ball version computer.  It doesn't have the capability of reading the dual layer DVD's so I'm planning on getting an external to do that.  This is probably an earlier version of the G4's. It is 800 Mhz.  I started out with a 20  back in the days when the computer's were little boxes in 1986 or so and NO ONE would have that much data to store!   Wink  I'm going to do that tomorrow on the 9.2.2 or 9.2.3.  I will have to look to see what version of that I have kicking around here. I'll keep you posted.

Hmmm...9.2.3? There is no 9.2.3; at least not in English.

On a related note, I discovered recently that Apple does offer a full 9.2.2 .dmg image file download, for free. This beats having to use a 9.0 or 9.1 installer CD, and then having to hassle with the one or two  upgrades to 9.2.2. If you need it, the .dmg file is about a 510 meg download, and is called NetBoot 9 v1.0. The .dmg image is hidden inside the NetBoot 9 package, so I wrote up a Read Me for it, for those who may need it...but you probably won't.   ;)

BTW, the first poster mentioned an OS 9 program similar to VSE Be Found, called "wolfexpress". Have you ever heard of it? Yesterday I scoured the web trying to find it, but I came up empty-handed.

Could have sworn I had higher than 9.2 but maybe not.  Need my glasses to read the darn things anyway.  I haven't heard of wolf express at all.  Tried searching with one word and two but didn't get any hits either.  You know. I'm using Visual Page to create my websites, it too doesn't work in OSX. I need a good wysiwyg web page creator and editor too.  Any ideas?  Although I've run an online business since '94, I HATE learning curves for fancy programs. Like simple KISS type programs, too busy for anything else.  You know of any?  Visual page is super easy to use and great for uploading to the web. However, it is getting dated since many of the markers, meta tags and stuff are now different than they used to be.

Yeah, I know what you mean about wearing glasses. I've been using them since I was six years old. At my age, my corneas are already getting rigid, so a few years back, I was forced to switch to bifocals, but I really don't like them. They're great for distance, and for using the computer, but for reading up close, neither the top nor the bottom lens works, so I have to just take off the darn things and stick the page about two inches from my face.  Smiley

Concerning web site design apps, well, years ago, I bought and used Adobe Page Mill. However, as I became more proficient at web site design, I pretty much abandoned it, and now do just about everything in BBEdit. BBEdit has a plug-in under the "Markup" menu called "Tidy", which is based on the BBTidy HTML plug-in. It is  really great, as it checks, and corrects, any HTML errors, if they are not too serious. It can also format things nicely for you as well, automatically.

Besides that, I have so many pages now in our different sites, that I have a lot of templates to use. All I normally do is grab an old page, edit it to make the new page, and then run it through Tidy for error correcting. I also run my text pages through BBEdit's spelling corrector.

There are plenty of HTML editors available today, some more complicated than others; and some are free. Here is a list of some of the ones that I am aware of:

Argena
Attic PageImp
Blue Box Simple Site
Cinnamon WebMaster
Claris Home Page
Cobwebber
CoolSearch-Replace

CreaText

Daktari
Deus Web Wizard

Hi

I also used VSE BeFound for many years until OSX came along. I then had to use an old iBook running OS9 to power up my trusty VSE BeFound, but it became time consuming transfering files from A to B etc... (the only thing that stopped me from selling my iBook was VSE BeFound, how sad is that?) The one thing I liked about it was it's ability to suggest keywords and add image tags... Does anyone know of anything that will do that on OSX - or even a PC running XP - I have downloaded many apps for XP that claim to suggest keywords and are simple to use, but they are either too complicated or just plain crap...

"Bring back VSE BeFound for OSX users!!!"

Hello TanOSX,

As I mentioned to goatgal88, for quite a few years now, I have done most of my HTML manually in BBEdit, including adding my title, description, keywords, and other meta tags. However, if you prefer to use a program instead, you might want to look into some of the following. I am not sure which are OSX compatible:

Bambusa
EzMetas
HTML Head Updater
HTML TagWriter
Image Sizer
ImageTagger
IMG Fixer
Injection
KeywordPageCreatr
Mach Ten Metas
Meta Content Creator
META Maker
Meta Tag Manager
Metagenerator
TagTool

There are also a number of free online services which will suggest keywords for a page. You just give it the URL for your page, it visits the page, and then it presents a list of suggested keywords. Just Google, and I am sure that you will find a few.

Hello Again goatgal88,

Hmmm...it sounds like you may possibly have misunderstood my earlier comments. To clarify, none of the programs I have listed in my previous posts are actual site submission tools. They are only tools to help you to PREPARE your site for submissionn to the search engines. In other words, they are HTML editors, meta tag creators, etc.

As we've all been discussing, at this current time, there is not a single Mac OSX site submission program for Mac webmasters . . . not a one. VSE Be Found in Classic mode is it . . . and sadly, it has not been updated in such a long time, that some of the program's scripts are outdated and no longer work properly. But, as I said before, there are still about 50 or 60 submission scripts which do submit properly.

As far as helping you choose some of the above-mentioned programs, well, as I've been saying, I normally use BBEdit, and a lot of copy and paste from already made templates on our sites. I honestly don't have any experience with any of the above programs; although I am sure that some of them must come with Read Me's or PDF manuals to help get you started, if you invest the time in reading them.

Following are two other programs I found on VersionTracker which you might find useful:

Advanced Web Ranking 5.0.3:

Minimum System: Jaguar+
VersionTracker Ranking: 4 stars
Price: $59/$149

Comment: This program does NOT submit your site to search engines; it only queries about 800 search engines, (mainly Google sites all over the world), and creates a variety of reports showing your sites rank in each of the search engines. There is a list of engines it uses on the company's home page.

WebranX Pro 1.1:

Minimum System: Panther+
VersionTracker Ranking: 4 stars
Price: Freeware

Comment: This program does NOT submit your site to search engines; it only queries some of the top search engines, and shows your sites rank in each of the major search engines.

Hope the above helps a little.
